Hairstyles, 1880’s Japan Western fashion was adopted by a number of women from the time Japan opened its ports in 1858.  They gave a uniquely Japanese twist to the new fashions by using influences of tradition such as fabrics and colors.  Likewise, Japanese fashion was interesting to some Western women who used aspects of kimonos in their informal wear.  The kimono would especially influence the Edwardian era, even in the most formal of dresses.
